Stepping out of my comfort zone: Back to School

With radical transparency in mind, this is a blog series providing ongoing insights into my transition from being stuck in the corporate world to the challenging freedom of entrepreneurship.

7b7bdaac37a95274fe7fa7a14e8c3cb3_13Minette and I had talked a lot about what my role(s) would be in the company once I started full time – in charge of finances, technical & web stuff, possibly some training as a coach to take on some of that effort, and also the nebulous “figure out how to make passive income from online offerings”. As it turns out one of the leaders in the online marketing space – Digital Marketer – was just starting a new Digital Marketing Mastery Certification program. So, boom went another $2000+ investment and I was back to school and getting immersed in a new world 🙂

40b6d91d1601ad8fa3d4129c40f2ec10_13The program is made up of 10 individual certification modules covering every aspect of digital marketing from Facebook ads to writing good copy to analyzing google analytics data. Across the board they promote a ‘value first’ strategy of marketing where the business builds social proof of their expertise and value first, rather than just selling from the start. The modules are 8+ hours each of video-based training and quizzes along with a project for each. The fact that I had already been telecommuting helped me dive into this and not get sidetracked. At the same time, training in the browser meant that Facebook and reddit were always too close: it pointed out a pretty bad distraction problem that is ongoing.

Out of the blue a friend of Minette’s gifted me a free ticket to Digital Marketer’s Traffic and Conversion Summit in San Diego. With 4000+ attendees and many vendors and speakers, this was not only fun, it immersed me further into the whole field. 3 days of great speakers and breakout sessions on so many different aspects of online marketing got me really enthused. Two big highlights were 1) the keynote with Gary Vaynerchuk (follow him – he’s pretty awesome) and 2) an afternoon set of speakers on podcasting (something we’re planning – stay tuned!).

I have two more certifications to complete plus the final mastery exam & project, then I get to apply all that learning to our business!
