Some Mondays seem difficult to get started, don’t they?
Last week I talked about overwhelm and how clarity is essential to eliminating overwhelm.
But sometimes, even clarity isn’t enough. Or positive thinking. Or mantras.
What do you do then?
You have two choices:
- Go back to bed and get more sleep. Really! You are a business owner, you can make that choice. It’s why you got into business in the first place. Lack of sleep is a big cause of stress, distress, and reduced productivity. Naps are your friends.
- Ask yourself, if not now then when? Our biggest hurdle to productivity can be inertia. Newton’s Law of Physics reminds us that without some type of force an object will not move. But once in motion, an object will stay in motion. So how do you get yourself to move? Take one step! Pick a project or task on your to-do list and take one step towards finishing it.
Here are a few examples:
It’s just like exercise. It’s a lot easier to head out the door for a walk when you are dressed and have your shoes one. Open the door and take the first step and you are on your way!
Have to write a blog post? Set a timer and spend 15 minutes brainstorming topics. Pick the one that sounds most fun to write. Save the others for other moments like this when inertia sets in.
Avoiding doing your financials? Pay one bill. Savor the fact that you can pay it.
Want to create an online course? Do a Facebook poll or email your community asking people if they would be interested. If you don’t get a response, celebrate. Why? You didn’t waste time creating something you “thought” people wanted.
Avoiding making phone calls? Turn on your favorite song and dance to it first, then make the calls. You will be amazed at how good you will feel.
When we put off the challenging parts of our work, they don’t go away. In fact, they grow in intensity and create a mental burden that adds stress, impacts sleep and stops us from growing our business. Whether we do the activity or not – we are thinking about it.
So I ask you today, In not now, when?
Do one thing. Anything. Then celebrate.

P.S. As I write this post for you I am considering what on my list am I resisting? Postponing? Facebook Live is one thing that keeps falling to my “I’ll do it tomorrow” list and exercise is another. There’s always something that feels hard, challenging or scary. To make both of these easier, I have scheduled them into my calendar. Exercise makes me feel better. When I feel better, I have more energy for Facebook Live. I know this. Time to step away from this computer and hit the streets.
