I wanted to stop by with a quick hello from San Diego, California!
Brad and I are at a digital marketing conference called Traffic and Conversion for three days of seriously geeky talk on how to grow your business online along with about 6,000 other business owners.
I have to admit it’s a bit overwhelming and quite the crush with around 6,000 people in attendance. Today there are at least 10 sessions I want to attend and all of of them would be helpful to us in our business. Everything from Facebook messenger to growing membership sites to adwords, SEO and data analytics.
There are speakers and vendors by the hundreds sharing their best ninja tricks and hacks to use technology and automation for increasing conversions.
All that tech speak may sound like a foreign language to you as a creative. And that’s okay. It’s our job at The Path to Profit Academy to know this stuff so we can help you understand the bits that might be useful to wherever you are in your digital marketing journey.
And while all the tech and geeking out on numbers and data is useful, it’s not what got me really excited on Day 1 of the event.
Brad and I are starry-eyed raving fans of Ryan Deiss, founder and CEO of Digital Marketer, the company hosting Traffic & Conversion Summit.
His opening keynote was so inspiring. It was titled: “CRAP!” – The Future of Marketing In a Bot-Infested, Facebook-Dominated World Where Everyone Just Buys All Their Stuff On Amazon.
There was one big take-away for me from his keynote that I also saw as a thread in all the other presentations I watched yesterday.
It’s time to put the human back in marketing.
This is a conference about digital marketing and automation tactics and yep all those super geeky ninja tricks to make money online, yet what the biggest names in the digital marketing industry are preaching is not automation – it’s connection.
The emphasis is on how we can use automation to invite people into real conversations with us, the leaders and experts – not staff or sales teams but us personally.
I have heard you say that you need more marketing or to figure out marketing but the truth is you need to have more conversations with real people. Great digital marketing can help you get those conversations but so can networking, speaking, attending Meetups, going to conferences like this one!
In this age of automation and artificial intelligence, there is one fundamental truth – YOU cannot be replaced in your business.
You are the leader, the expert, the guide.
What I see holding creative entrepreneurs back is fear. You distract yourself from doing what is required to grow a profitable business by hiding out behind your computer thinking that more posts on Facebook or Instagram will fix everything or that if you just get that online course created, everything will be okay.
Another marketer I admire, Marisa Murgatroyd, always says “You have to learn to sell offline before you can sell online.”
Have you been hiding out?
I challenge you this week to look at how you are spending your time.
Are you connecting with people face to face over coffee, at a networking group or a Meetup?
How could you add one opportunity to go where your tribe is?
This is the secret to successful marketing. It’s the secret I have used to build two six figure businesses.
I know, I know, you are an introvert or you don’t know what to say or where to go… I get that it’s hard, I do really.
The truth is it doesn’t matter where you go to connect in the beginning.
Start with one person. Or two people.
Have a tea party in your living room for a handful.
Share from your heart about who you help and why.
It will get easier, I promise.
The first time I had to stand up at a networking event and share my 30 second commercial in a room full of about 100 people, I was terrified. My knees were shaking and my face turned beet red. I had no clue what to say or what I was doing. I hadn’t even started my business yet.
I kept going.
I got better.
5 years later I was named small business owner of the year by my local Chamber of Commerce.
If this school teacher turned entrepreneur can do it, so can you.

I got your back.
Yep, me personally, the human Minette, the one who sees you and understands your creative genius.
