Are you building the right type of business model for your creative business archetype?
I’ve been thinking a lot recently about business models and how easy it can be to get overwhelmed by all the options we creative entrepreneurs have to make money in the global marketplace. The challenge for any creative is knowing where to start. That’s why I designed the Creative Business Archetype quiz to help you determine your next steps.
I have also seen many of the mistakes creatives make when it comes to monetizing their gifts and talents. The most frequent mistake they make is trying to either implement the wrong business model for their creative archetype or trying to implement too many business models all at once.
What is a business model?
Simply put, a business model is the system or structure you use to make money in your business. Examples include selling services like coaching, design, marketing, legal, financial, etc. These services could be offered in many formats: on one one, done for you, done with you, do it yourself, online, in person, etc. Other examples include selling products directly to the marketplace or through a wholesale or licensing model. The options are endless, where do you start?
How do I know if I am building the right business model?
The first step to determining if you are building the right business model is to determine what your Creative Business Archetype is. Below, I will give a brief description of the 3 different archetypes I have discovered in working with creatives for the past several years. You can also take the official quiz here.
Each archetype is associated with a different set of business models that work best for that type. Some of my clients have realized they are doing too much. Others have realized that they are building the wrong business or have been doing the wrong type of work for decades and now understand why they have been so unhappy in their work.
The Mentor Business Archetype
If your predominant creative type is the mentor, then you are in your happy place when you are teaching, speaking, networking, mentoring or connecting with people. It doesn’t matter if you are connecting to one or to thousands; your primary motivation is inspiring and educating others. You are passionate about sharing information and knowledge that will help others to succeed.
You also consider yourself to be a lifelong learner and you often invest in more education for yourself through books, courses, certifications and advanced college degrees.
You love connecting with people and building relationships. Community is important to you and you thrive when you are either a member of or leading a tribe of like-minded people.
As a creative entrepreneur, you will thrive as a teacher, speaker, trainer, coach or consultant.
The Maker Business Archetype
If your predominant creative type is the Maker, then you value freedom and creativity. You get your inspiration from adventures whether they are in your backyard or around the globe. Aesthetics and beauty are important to you. You tend to be enthusiastic and colorful in your personality.
You are an artist at heart and your art may take many forms: writing, painting, performing, designing, or crafting.
You are happiest when you are creating something new and often feel flooded by more ideas than you have time to implement. You are better at creating ideas and concepts than you are at seeing them through. Once the newness wears off, you tend to shift direction to find excitement and inspiration again.
As a creative entrepreneur, you will thrive as an artist, writer, graphic designer, interior designer, photographer, performer, filmmaker, crafter or freelancer.
The Maverick Business Archetype
If you’re predominant creative type is the Maverick, you dream of building an empire. You are a natural leader with a take-charge personality. You tend to focus on getting results, the faster the better. You can be comfortable with taking risks, especially if you have the chance to win big. You can often see connections between people or ideas that others don’t see.
Your creative genius is in your ability to see, define and articulate the big picture vision for yourself or someone else. You are happiest when you are delegating mundane tasks to others so you can focus on the vision.
You are very competitive and see sales as just another game to play. You love having your finger in every aspect of your business and strategy is your creative playground.
As a creative entrepreneur you will thrive as a corporate consultant, CEO, or thought leader who masterfully combines many business models into a unique empire of your own.
It’s so easy to get bombarded and overwhelmed by people telling you that you need to do one on one mentoring, offer group programs, sell your products online, do more speaking, host events, go to trade shows, create Facebook ads… the list goes on an on.
Plus we can easily be swayed by the get rich quick promises being offered online. Buy my course, build it my way, just do this one thing… And while there are some core business and marketing strategies that are universal and will work for everyone, it’s important to be crystal clear what you are building and why.
That’s why I am so excited about this quiz designed just for creatives to help you understand exactly what business model will work for you. I encourage you to take the quiz now, it will take just a few minutes (it’s just 9 questions.)
I’d love for you to share in the comments what your creative business archetype is!
